Once you’ve moved your items and boxes over to your unit, start by filling the unit with the heavier and more sturdy boxes.
Pack the unit based on similar groups, such as living room items, dining room, bedroom, kitchen, etc.
As you put each of these items into place in your storage unit, get your itemized list with the box numbers.
Use a new sheet of paper and make a simple overhead sketch of your storage unit. Then map the box locations out on this sketch as the boxes are put into place.

For example, furniture is substantial and takes up space, so break it down as much as possible to minimize the storage space used.
Disassemble bed frames, headboards, entertainment centers and hutches into their basic parts. Store tables vertically by removing the table legs.
Use old sheets, quilts and/or blankets to cover the furniture so that dust and moisture don’t collect.
This is also a perfect time to clean your furniture with your favorite cleaner or polish. Clean upholstered and leather furniture with a portable hand vacuum before placing covers over them.

The most common method used today is to place your items in plastic bins. These are available at many retail stores and online retailers. They’re inexpensive, easy to transport and stackable.
Although they do cost more than cardboard boxes and that’s something to consider when purchasing 50 of one or the other.
As mentioned, another option is to use cardboard boxes. Some people prefer these because they’re more durable than plastic storage bins. However, they’re bulky and can be difficult to transport.

Another popular choice is to use sturdy shelving especially if your storage rental is part of a long term solution. Nice inexpensive shelves can be found at big box retailers like Home Depot and Sam’s Club.
Shelves are great for keeping smaller items safe and out of reach — and can allow you to store items up higher.
Whatever type of container you choose, make sure it’s strong enough to hold whatever you put inside it. Don’t use flimsy containers as you may return later to an unexpected surprise.
The last thing you want is for a flimsy box or container to collapse onto a person and possibly injuring them.

1. Each storage unit has a lock. Keep your lock key in a place where you can always remember to find it. And label it. Two keys are even better – you can put one with your car clicker so you always know where it is. I can tell you that it’s super frustrating to show up at the storage center — then go through the gate driving to the unit — only to discover you have the wrong keys.
Having a small broom handy can help with a quick clean of your storage unit.
2. Your storage unit should be clean when you first arrive. Having a small broom with you to do that “extra cleaning” can help protect your items.
Having a cell phone picture of your gate code may be useful at some time in the future.
3. The storage center gives you a card with the gate passcode. Take a picture of that passcode with your cell phone. That way, you have quick access to the Entrance and Exit code in case you need it. For example, if your storage solution phone app doesn’t want to open the gate this time.
4. Always enter the gate exit code when leaving – instead of conveniently following the exiting car in front of you. That helps your storage center with their security.

Explosives
You can’t store explosives inside a storage unit. This would include dynamite, blasting caps, black powder, gunpowder, ammunition, nitroglycerin, TNT, C-4, Semtex, plastic explosives, military ordnance, grenades, mines, bombs, landmines, artillery shells, mortars, rocket launchers, missiles, cluster munitions, nuclear weapons, chemical weapons, biological weapons, radiological weapons, incendiary devices, pyrotechnic devices, and improvised explosive devices (IED).
Sometimes people have classic grenades that are supposed to be inert but might not be, so not a good idea to store items like that.
Hazardous Material
Any kind of hazardous material such as chemicals, propane, aerosols, asbestos, lead, mercury, arsenic, cyanide or other dangerous materials are the kind of item not to put in storage.
Anything that could possibly blow up or cause damage to the storage facility shouldn’t be stored there — as it could hurt someone.
Weapons
You can’t store weapons inside a storage unit. You can imagine why that is. Items like these can greatly increase liability issues for the storage center.
Instead, you should keep all firearms unloaded and locked away at all times and preferably in your nearby possession.
Any kind of illegal material
If you’re planning on holding tobacco products, gambling equipment, stolen property, counterfeit currency, unclothed pictures, human remains, contraband, or any other type of illegal material, you’ll need to find somewhere else to store it.
Alcohol
Can you store alcohol in a storage unit? You can’t store alcohol inside a storage unit.
Even if you think you’re going to drink it, you won’t be able to store it. It is against the law to store liquor or beer inside a self-storage facility and it might even be flammable.
If you have a fine wine to store, you may want to talk with storage centers that offer climate controlled storage to see if they will let you store your wine.

Illegal Drugs

I know that I’ve got several of those item for taking care of the car in my garage — but for storing them in a storage unit it’s not permitted.
Chemicals
You can’t store chemicals inside a storage unit. Chemicals like acids, pool acid, alkalis, caustics, oxidizing agents, reducing agents, corrosives, organic compounds, inorganic compounds, solvents, detergents, bleaches, dyes, stains, paints, varnishes, adhesives, sealants, glues, resins, epoxies, polymers and elastomers are examples of what you can’t store inside a storage unit.
I was actually surprised about the pool chemicals but it makes sense. If you have any of those, you will need to find another place to keep them.
It’s amazing how many of those items we each have at home — but can’t place into storage. Makes me think… is my garage safe with all this cleaning stuff I have in there?
Flammables
These include anything that could be easily combustible where it could pose a fire hazard. Just like was mentioned above being anything that could create an explosion.
This could include anything that could contaminate the air quality and cause harm the storage building itself.
Pesticides
These most likely would be included above as a hazardous chemical liquid, pesticides are so very commonplace that it’s easy to forget how potent they can be.
They’re often used on lawns, gardens, crops, trees, shrubs, flowers, fruits and vegetables. Pesticides are usually applied by spraying, dusting, spreading, dipping, soaking and other methods — so they can come in liquid or powder form.
When moving belongings from a garage, its easy to forget that those pesticides are not allowed at the storage center.
Animals
Most storage centers do not allow animals inside their units. The reason of course is fairly obvious. For example, imagine if an animal gets loose, it could damage property or even injure someone else. Plus it’s very cruel to subject an animal to certain seasonal conditions.
Animals such as dogs, cats, birds, snakes, lizards, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, mice, rats, turtles, frogs, fish, reptiles, amphibians, insects, cockroaches, crickets, grasshoppers, beetles, termites, wasps, flies, mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, hornets and others are all strictly prohibited and not allowed inside a storage facility.
Human body parts, blood, body fluids and feces
This is a harder one to talk about. Nobody wants to picture these things, but the storage center doesn’t want to see them either.
Human body parts, blood, human blood products, human body fluids and excretions (feces) are all considered biohazardous materials and are therefore not allowed inside a storage unit.
Medical Waste
Similar to the last one mentioned, obvious medical waste includes needles (used needles too), syringes (used syringes), scalpels, bandages (used bandages), gauzes, sponges, cotton balls, swabs, thermometers, IV bags, tubing, bottles, vials, tubes, caps, stoppers, clamps, sutures, dressings.
It goes even deeper and includes anything made out of plastic, metal, glass, rubber, paper, wood, cloth, foam, cardboard or leather that has been contaminated with bodily fluids, blood, tissue, pus, urine, saliva, sweat, mucus, breast milk, amniotic fluid, oral rinse, ophthalmic solution, otic solution, parenteral solution, intravenous infusion, intrauterine device, tampon applicator, contraceptive sponge, cervical cap, diaphragm cup, condom, dental dam — I think you get the idea.
That’s a long list but I guess someone in the past has tried to store something like these items in the list.
Unsafe and Hazardous Waste
In addition to all those hazardous items mentioned above, this goes further by including toxic waste, radioactive waste, and even electronic waste. These are another example of what not to store in a storage unit.

When storing your RV battery, try keep it away from heat sources and moisture. That may be difficult to do considering you’re likely storing the RV during the bad weather season.
Look to store your RV in a dry place that has good air circulation. Keep it away from direct sunlight. Don’t leave it outside during winter months if possible.
The type of battery you have can change how you maintain that battery while in storage. The different types of recreational vehicle (and car vehicle) batteries include the no maintenance AGM and gel cell, the flooded lead acid, the sealed lead acid, and lithium ion.
Each type of battery has its own advantages and disadvantages. Here’s an explanation about each type of battery. After that, there’s an explanation on how to maintain your batteries while your RV is in storage.
AGM and Gel Cell Batteries
These batteries are known for their high power density.
AGM and Gel Cell are a little different from each other but these days they’re considered about the same. They operate best when the batteries are kept at room temperature.
If you decide to go with AGM or Gel Cell batteries, you should follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. This includes keeping the batteries cool and charging them regularly.
I have two AGM interstate batteries in my RV cabin and a sealed lead acid battery in the RV engine bay. This has worked out very well for me.
Flooded Lead Acid Batteries
Flooded Lead Acid batteries are very reliable and easy to use. However, they do require regular maintenance. To avoid corrosion, it’s recommended that you store them in a dry environment.
If you choose to use flooded lead acid batteries, you should inspect them at least once every six months. Make sure that you remove any sediment that builds up inside the battery.
These batteries are meant to be installed upright so that the liquid inside doesn’t spill out the top.
Sealed Lead Acid Batteries
Sealed Lead Acid batteries are great for those who like to travel light. These batteries are inexpensive and easy to use.
They are not affected by extreme temperatures. However, they do tend to corrode over time.
If you decide to use sealed lead acid batteries, you need to check on them every month. If you see any corrosion on the battery posts, remove that corrosion with a post brush.
There are also some products available that help protect against corrosion that you put onto the battery posts.
Lithium Ion Batteries
Lithium Ion batteries are expensive but they are extremely powerful. They are also very durable and lightweight.
They are also used to power electric cars however they can be used in recreational vehicles (although it’s probably the most expensive vehicle battery option)
One benefit is that they don’t leak. If you decide that you want to use lithium ion batteries, they will perform well but can be expensive. For the same money, it might be better to invest in a larger capacity standard battery.
RV Storage While Still Taking Care of Your Batteries and Generator
For Inside Storage: Often times inside storage will have a 120v outlet you can plug into. The standard 120v outlet won’t work for your 20/30/50 amp connector, but you can plug a charger into the outlet and then charge your batteries from the charger.
If you have a charger that can trickle charge the batteries once you reach full charge, you can leave the charger plugged in for a while.
I charge the engine bay battery without charging the cabin batteries. Once it’s charged enough, then I will put the charger on the cabin batteries. I’ve never tried charging all the batteries at the same time and don’t recommend doing that.
Your best bet is to check your RV owner’s manual on the manufacturers preferred method of keeping batteries charged.
For Outside Storage, Covered Storage (and When There’s No Electrical Outlet): When you don’t have the ability to plug in a charger, your best bet is to run the engine and let it charge the batteries. This can also refresh your RV engine.
I recommend also getting a portable jump start battery, just in case. There are battery chargers that also have jump start capability (my favorite is the Walmart one).
Once started, run the engine for about 20 minutes, keep an eye on the fuel gauge to make sure there’s enough fuel. Let the batteries charge this way.
For your generator, you want to run it often enough so that the carburetor bowl doesn’t get misshapen. This means having the RV outside for a few minutes. The experts recommend exercising your generator at least once a month.
I actually prefer to exercise the generator twice a month. I exercise it by running it for about 15-20 minutes – part of that time with a medium to heavy load on it (such as air conditioner on medium or high).
Step by Step Process for Refreshing Your RV Engine, Batteries and Generator
We recommend to have this done once or twice each month to keep your RV in performance ready condition:
1. Start the RV engine.
2. Let your RV engine run for a few minutes, before starting the generator.
3. Keep the RV engine running.
4. Start the generator and run it a few minutes before putting any load on it.
5. Run a load on the generator for at least five minutes, a load could be the air conditioner, then turn the load off.
6. Let the generator run a few minutes with no load.
7. Then turn the generator off while the RV engine is still running.
8. Let the RV engine run for a few minutes and then turn it off.
Optional: On gas engines, you could put some Sta-Bil into the gas tank to help preserve the quality of the gasoline.
The Security of Your Stored RV

Storage facility security measures include electronic gated access, video surveillance, and alarm systems — all are important. You should always check with your storage facility regarding their security policies and procedures.
You may also want to consider an alarm for your RV to add to the security — and if your storage center allows it. It would need to be a reliable alarm that doesn’t sound too many false alarms.
What you don’t want is for your RV to have false alarms and constantly going off — with no one in the storage center except for a live in manager. That could grow tiring very quickly.
There are also RV video alarms that send a video signal to your cell phone to alert you to problems. There is even a dog video “nanny cam” that allows you to see what your dog is doing at any time — this type of system can also double as video surveillance when your RV is sitting in storage.
Something that thieves are looking for lately is to swipe the catalytic converter. RV catalytic converters are typically larger than auto ones and they can be stolen very quickly and sold for a few hundred dollars.
Besides being in highly secured storage, here are five additional ways you can protect your RV from catalytic converter and other theft:
1. Move your RV around to different spaces in the Storage Center so it doesn’t look like the RV is sitting for a long time.
2. Have your RV parked next to the live in manager’s home spot. I did this before, it was very nice although sometimes the manager’s dogs would bark at me when I was checking my RV.
3. Use a Catalytic Converter Cover. These covers are available at most RV parts stores. They’re made of metal and snap over the top of the converter. They look like little shields and are meant to stop people from reaching underneath the converter.
4, You can have the Catalytic Converter painted. If you do this, make sure the paint is thick enough to prevent someone from removing the cover. Also, if you choose to use a spray paint, make sure it has a UV inhibitor added to it.
5. You can put an ID number on the Catalytic Converter. It will cost more money but it will deter thieves. It needs to be large enough for a would be thief to see it before cutting out your converter.

Thanks for asking! My answer actually relates to storing your RV too! Generally the Class of RV you get is loosely related to the length of the RV. And the length and height of the RV will greatly determine where you can store your RV.
With that in mind, let’s look at how it works:
Generally speaking, the Class A is the longest RV of the three. The Class A looks similar to a bus and can actually be as long as a bus. Class A RV’s can be as short as 25 feet to as long as 45 feet long – with the average being about 37 feet long. The Class A is like having a home that you can take anywhere. Pictures taken inside one of these models even looks like a house.
The Class B looks like a modified van where the roof is extended and taller than a van. Often the length is the same as a van. These RV’s pack a lot of features (like a bathroom, a bed and a cooking area), while still having the usability of a regular sized van. The Class B can fit almost anywhere that a car can fit, you just have to watch out for the taller roofline when going into a parking garage. There are many Class B RVs that started out as a van from Ford, Chevy, Mercedes and even Volkswagen — and then were modified starting with the roof.
The Class C is almost like a cross between a Class A and a Class B. The Class C will have a van front end (frequently a Ford E450, Chevy Van or Mercedes Van) and then will have a longer cabin space — almost looking like a fancy panel truck. Class C units will have a lot of bed space, often a dining area, kitchen, bathroom and plenty of room to move around. A Class C RV at 11 to 12 feet tall will be taller than a Class B but usually not as tall as the 14 foot Class A. Class C RV’s can be as short as 23 feet and as long as 35 feet.
The Super Class C is a newer style of Class C but is closest to being like a Class A (except with a van looking front end). They are from 36 to 40 feet long and weigh twice as much as a Class C. Just like a Class A, they come with every feature imaginable and are about the same height as a Class A. You really feel like you’re in a house on the road. Knowing what type of RV you have (or are considering) can play a factor in determining what type of storage space you need and the length.
