The Benefits of Climate Controlled Storage (2023)

There are many items and possessions that each of us have that can be sensitive to extreme temperature conditions — such as seasonal heat and cold.

If you plan to keep these items for an extended time, you may want to think about storing them in a climate controlled storage facility.

Benefits of Climate Controlled Storage

The best way to keep your items safe from the elements is by storing them in climate-controlled units.

These units are designed to maintain a constant temperature so that your belongings will be protected from extreme temperatures.

They also help prevent moisture damage because they can regulate humidity levels inside the unit.

Climate controlled storage means that specific storage spaces are maintained at a certain set of temperatures to keep things safe from extreme heat or cold conditions.

The humidity is also maintained at a certain level to provide the best conditions for storing your belongings.

This is contrasted with temperature controlled storage which keeps a steady temperature year long to protect your belongings.

Often times this can be enough to protect your delicate belongings without having to go through the extra expense of maintaining the humidity level.

Omaha is known for having bitter cold winter temperatures and humid summers.

You personally might be able to adapt to different climates throughout the year, but your stored belongings may not. Weather-sensitive objects, like photographs or antique furniture, may be damaged by extreme temperatures or rain.

For items that need special care, look into storage facility options with climate-controlled storage.

The best storage rates for climate controlled units are often kept secret. Even though many spaces are sold out, a quick call can still locate a good space nearby.

Call now to get an estimate and reserve your space — all within 5 minutes. To serve you quicker, call wait time is near zero.

These are the Top 8 Reasons Why You Might Need a Climate Controlled Unit

If you aren’t sure whether you need a temperature-controlled storage facility, here are some of things to consider when deciding.

The answers to these questions helps to discover the reasons why you might need climate control.

The best way to determine whether or not you need climate controlled storage is by asking yourself…

1. Do I have valuable items that need to be stored?

2. Do I have items that need to be protected from pests?

3. Do I have fragile items that need to be maintained at a specific temperature?

4. Are my items easily damaged by excessive heat or cold?

5. Is my home located in a humid region?

6. How long am I planning on keeping my items?

7. How often do I plan on moving them?

8. Can I afford to purchase a climate controlled storage unit?

The above are just a few examples of when a temperature or climate controlled unit might come in handy.

It’s recommended to consult with a professional before making any decisions regarding your storage needs.

Even though many storage spaces are sold out right now, the right call can locate a good space nearby.

It’s important to know whether you’d like to store your items indoors or outdoors. Indoor storage is usually better for electronics, while outdoor storage is ideal for large items like furniture.

In addition, you’ll want to make sure that your storage facility has security measures in place to protect your valuables.

There are Three Main Types of Climate-Controlled Units

Indoor Storage

Climate controlled storage units are mainly available at indoor storage facilities.

While some outdoor or drive-up storage centers may offer climate controlled units, they are most commonly found in single or multi-story storage buildings.

Because these units are located inside a building, they are kept at a comfortable temperate range between 55 and 80 degrees, just like your home .

The air conditioning system keeps the interior of the unit cool while heating systems warm it up during the winter months. Some units even include dehumidifiers to reduce the amount of moisture within the unit.

If you’re planning to store large items, you should consider using a climate controlled unit instead.

Air Cooled Storage

Used in states where there is extreme hot weather year round, air cooled storage is when cold air (or refrigerated air) is circulated through storage containers using a fan.

If you want to store things safely, then keeping them in an airtight container is probably the best idea.

However, if you’re going to store things that are sensitive to humidity, then using a dehumidifier may be better than using an A/C unit.

Self Contained Climate Control Units

Self contained units are portable units that can be used anywhere. They do not require any type of structure to operate.

These units are typically placed on a truck bed or trailer and hauled to the location where you need storage. Once there, the unit is set up and ready to use. You simply load your items into the unit and close the door.

Sometimes called a “refer unit” (because of the refrigeration) these can be used for perishable items such as foods or flowers/trees (such as Christmas Trees).

In this case, the unit needs to be equipped with a compressor and condenser coil. The unit must be installed in a well ventilated area away from other structures.

When choosing a self-contained unit, make sure that it has a good seal around the doors and windows. This helps to protect against insects and rodents.

It also prevents moisture from entering the unit which could cause mold growth.

What are Climate Controlled Units Used For…

If you want to keep your items protected from the elements, you might want to get a climate controlled storage unit.

Non-climate rooms (non-climate storage) are perfect for storing those things you’d normally keep in your garage, shed or cellar.

However, items that need to stay at a certain temperature should be kept in an environment where they can maintain their optimal conditions. These rooms protect your belongings from extreme heat and dangerous moisture levels.

When you’re looking for a place to store your temperature sensitive belongings, you’ll want to find a facility that offers both climate control and security features.

If you have valuables or important documents stored somewhere else, having access to a secure storage unit means you won’t have to worry about losing anything.

What is the Difference Between “Temperature Controlled” and “Climate Controlled”…

Temperature Controlled

Temperature controlled storage refers to a room or unit that maintains a specific temperature. A typical example would be a refrigerator or freezer.

The first thing to consider is what temperature range you would like to store your items in. You’ll probably find that most facilities offer several different ranges to accommodate all kinds of needs.

For example, if you’re looking for a place to store antiques, you might want to check out a facility with a very low temperature setting. On the other hand, if you’re looking to store electronics, you might prefer a higher temperature setting.

Climate Controlled

Climate controlled storage refers to a space that maintains a specific humidity level. Humidity controls how much water vapor is present in the air.

When humidity levels rise, condensation forms on surfaces. This can lead to mold growth and damage to your belongings.

Some areas tend to get more humid than others, and this can cause problems for many types of items.

A climate control unit can help regulate humidity levels to ensure that your items stay dry and free from mold growth.

Humidity levels can also vary greatly depending on what’s being stored. For instance, if you’re storing food, you don’t want to raise the humidity too high because it will encourage bacteria growth.

On the other hand, if you’re storing clothing, you may want to increase the humidity so that the material doesn’t shrink.

The Benefits of Climate Controlled Storage

Extreme temperatures can be damaging for items stored in a non-regulated space. With temperature control, your items are better able to withstand extreme weather conditions.

A temperature-regulated unit isn’t just there to keep your things safe. It provides a protective environment too.

It will also help you keep cool when you visit your self-service locker during the summer months. Moreover, since most storage facilities with climate control are usually housed indoors rather than outside, a nice benefit is the additional layer of protection for your stuff and your personal belongings.

Even if climate-controlled units cost more than regular ones, the money you’ll spend on repairs or replacements for damaged goods is worth every penny.

Keeping leather and fabric from turning yellow, hardening or degrading

Preventing mildews, molds and pests

Preventing Wooden Furniture from Warping and Splitting

Warping caused by warm, humid conditions can be prevented by keeping the wooden out of heat and direct sunlight. Cold dry winter air can make wood shrink and crack.

Neither extreme is good when it comes to wood.

Reducing Corrosion and Oxidation of Metals

If you have metal objects… such as machinery, tools, knives, forks, spoons, pots, pans, etc., then you should know that rust can ruin them.

If you live in an area where the ground is constantly wet, then you need to take steps to prevent rust from forming on your metal items.

Keeping Leather and Fabric Soft and Supple

Leather and fabrics can become brittle and stiff over time. They can also turn yellow, harden, and degrade.

The best way to protect your leather and fabric items is to store them in a climate-controlled facility.

Preventing Mildew, Molds and Pests

Mildew, molds and pest infestations can wreak havoc on your possessions. These organisms thrive in moist environments, which means that they love to grow in places like basements, garages, attics, and sheds.

To avoid having to deal with all of these issues, invest in a climate-controlled storage unit.

You won’t have to worry about any of these problems anymore!

Places to Get Moving Boxes including Free Moving Boxes (2023)

Moving into a new home or apartment is exciting, but moving day can also be stressful.

If you’re worried about packing and unpacking, don’t worry – there are ways to make the move easier.

Moving from one place to another can be challenging, especially if you’ve never done it before. Packing and unpacking takes time, energy and patience. There’s no way around it.

Where to Quickly Get Free Moving Boxes

On my last move, I got over twenty free moving boxes by going to a handful of U-Haul dealers near me and sorting through their moving box “leave one, take one” bin. This convenient service allows people to return their slightly used moving boxes so that the next person can use them for a move. Highly recommended.

The Best Plan is to Prepare Ahead of Time

You can minimize stress during the move by preparing ahead of time. The key is to plan out each step of the move.

This means having a checklist of things to pack and unpack, and knowing where they go.

It also means making sure that everything has its own box or bag so that you know what goes with what.

If you’re moving yourself, you may not have much help. But if you hire movers, you can get them to do all the heavy lifting for you.

Hiring professional movers will save you time and money, and give your belongings the best possible care.

If you’re moving locally, consider hiring a mover who offers local services. You can find movers near you online, or ask friends and family for recommendations.

If you‘re moving long distance, you might need to rent a truck or trailer. Renting a vehicle will allow you to transport more items at once.

Make sure you choose a reputable company that provides quality service.

Packing boxes After planning then comes the packing

Take Inventory of What You Have

When you’re ready to start packing, take inventory of what you already have. Look through drawers and your closets to see what you still have.

Don’t forget to include clothing, linens, dishes, silverware, books, coins, toys and other household goods.

Once you’ve packed up as many items as you can, you should now begin organizing.

Start with the room you’ll be using first. Take everything out of the room and put it on the floor.

Then sort through the items and decide which ones you want to keep — and which ones you want to donate or throw away.

Begin Packing

Once you’ve finished sorting through your possessions, you can begin packing. Use boxes and bags to store your items. Label each box or bag clearly so you won’t mix up any of your belongings.

You can also give each box or bag a consecutive number, which can help with making a map of where each it is if you place it into storage.

After the Move

Now that you’ve moved, you’ll probably want to clean up after yourself. Cleaning up after a big move can be exhausting, so try to schedule some downtime between cleaning and packing.

Remember to keep your vacuum saved for last so you can use it to clean the room and then pack it up when finished.

Finding Free Moving Boxes

The answer is a definite “yes.”

My favorite places to get moving boxes is at U-Haul. I got several free moving boxes by going to a handful of UHaul dealers near me and sorting through their “leave one, take one” bin.

A storage or moving company may be willing to sell you some boxes. You might also be able to locate some free moving boxes, but it can be hit and miss — and there might not be any available where you live.

For the best price moving boxes, the more places you check, the better your chances of finding a stache of free boxes.

Places to check for boxes include Craigslist, Barnes & Noble, U-Haul Customer Connect, Starbucks, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Walgreens, PetCo, PetSmart, Walmart, Target, WinCo, Costco, LetGo, Facebook, Freecycle, Dollar Stores, and Rite Aid.

If you’re at a store that sells larger products (such as a grocery store), just ask one of the employees if they have some extra boxes lying around.

Once you get done with the boxes, you could return the favor by taking your boxes to a local U-Haul for their “take one leave one” — and the next person with a move can get some free moving boxes that way.

Craigslist

Ask at online sites — like Craigslist — where they might have free moving boxes in the items for sale category.

Craigslist probably has the largest free section of any website out there. They may have free boxes available for anyone who wants them, whether they’re moving from one location to another.

So go directly to the free section and look for your boxes. There are too many choices for you to pick just one!

If you’re lucky enough to find some empty moving containers, they tend to be available early in the week, just after most people have finished packing up their stuff from the weekend.

Local Classifieds

Like Craigslist, local classified ads websites often have many listings for free moving boxes near you. You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars to get your boxes.

All you need to do is look online and you may find someone who has boxes they’re willing to give away — or even sell you some for just a few bucks. Finding free boxes can be easy when you know where to look.

In addition, you should check the classified ads on other websites such as eBay, Amazon, and Facebook Marketplace.

Petco and PetSmart

Petco and PetSmart may offer free boxes for customers buying pet food, treats, and accessories. With some of the feed bags weighing up to 50 pounds, large boxes are needed to hold those — and they just might have some for you.

Where to Get Specialty Moving Boxes

We first preparing for a move, specialty boxes don’t readily come to mind. After all… a box is a box, isn’t it?

It’s turns out not all boxes are created equal — and that’s a good thing when it comes to large and heavy items.

How do you move a bed or safely pack a big screen TV? That’s when a specially designed box is very useful.

The specialty boxes can be harder to track down. For instance, uhaul has a mattress bag with handles that also keeps the mattress from getting dirty.

Here’s a list of the Specialty boxes you might need:

  • Mattress Box and/or Bag
  • Golf Box
  • Rifle Box
  • Tennis Racquet Box
  • Bike Box
  • Large Screen Television Box

We found that Uhaul had most of those types of specialty boxes at a reasonable price. We just walked in to our local Uhaul and picked up what we needed. They were very helpful. (They are also a great place for propane.)

You can also call the local U-Haul customer service number before heading over to their place. The customer service representative should be able to tell you which boxes you’ll need and how much they cost. They’ll also let you know if they have any specialty boxes you can use.

The UPS Store also offers specialty boxes designed for different types of shipments. These include boxes made specifically for mattresses, TVs, computers, and more.

Carrying boxes Carrying boxes is best when done together.

How Many Boxes Will You Need?

That’s a great question when figuring out how many moving boxes to order.

The answer is… it depends on your move size and weight. Look through your things, especially your closet and storage areas. More things means more boxes.

The general rule is to plan on using up to 100 boxes of various sizes to completely pack up belongings from a 1,600 square-foot home.

If you’re moving across town, then you may only need a few boxes. However, if you’re moving cross country, you’ll often need more than that.

For example, if you’re moving from Los Angeles to San Francisco, and you have three rooms then you’ll need approximately 10 boxes. That’s because it takes three boxes to cover an average sized room.

When you’re planning your move, make sure to factor in the weight of each box. This can help you determine how many boxes you’ll need.

For example, if you plan on using a dolly to transport your boxes, you’ll need more boxes than if you were going to carry them yourself.

Also, keep in mind that you’ll need to buy boxes for every single item you’re taking with you. You might not be able to reuse old boxes.

So if you’re moving across town and you have a lot of items, you’ll need a lot of boxes. On the other hand, if you’re moving to a new apartment and you have very little stuff, you’ll probably only need 2 boxes.

In conclusion, the cost for moving boxes adds up quickly and fortunately there are several ways to save money on getting moving boxes. If you want to save the most money, you’ll want to consider finding free boxes first and then purchase the rest.

However if you’re looking to save time, you’ll just want to purchase boxes.

Either way, you’ll want to find the best deal possible. So shop around online and ask friends who’ve moved recently.

After the move, you can then unpack, clean and relax.

Relaxing after the move After the move, be sure to take a moment to relax.

Many people ask us this question of how many moving boxes do I need.

The number of boxes you need for your move depends on various factors, including the size of your home, the amount of belongings you have, and how efficiently you pack.

Here’s a general guideline to help estimate the number of boxes you may need:

  1. Studio or 1-bedroom apartment: 20-40 boxes
  2. 2-bedroom apartment or small house: 40-60 boxes
  3. 3-bedroom house: 60-80 boxes
  4. 4-bedroom house: 80-100 boxes
  5. Larger homes: 100+ boxes

These estimates can change a lot based on your specific circumstances.

To get have a better guess, consider the following:

  1. Take inventory of your items, including clothing, kitchenware, books and other belongings.
  2. Think about the packing materials you’ll need for fragile items, such as bubble wrap or packing paper, which may require additional boxes.
  3. Consider the size of your furniture and whether it can be disassembled. Some items may require specialized boxes or crates.
  4. Keep in mind that heavier items should be packed in smaller boxes, while lighter items can be packed in larger boxes.

It’s always better to have a few extra boxes on hand, as it’s common to underestimate the number of boxes needed. You can always give away or recycle unused boxes after your move — many people do exactly that (so that others can receive their free boxes).

Partly to organize how you will store the items — along with visualizing if your items will fit into a small, medium or large storage container.

Then use our simple self storage calculator. It’s an easy way to quickly size up different types of units for storing things like clothes, books, and furniture.

The average person needs about 3 square feet per item stored. If you have a lot of stuff, that number can go down.

Self Storage Sizes

This short video can help to picture the different storage unit sizes.

How are Storage Units Measured?

The units are measured in a similar way to measuring a room in your house.

The measure consists of the length (in feet) of the front width by the width of the side wall adjacent to it. This is the most popular way of measuring a storage unit

Typically the measurement will state the front width first followed by the side width.

So a ten by ten unit means that the front width is ten feet long and the side wall next to it is ten feet wide.

Contrast that with a 5 x 10 unit where the front wall is five feet in width and the side wall runs back tent feet.

Whereas a 10 x 20 storage unit would have a 10 foot front width (with an 8 foot 8 inch doorway opening) and the side wall would go back 20 feet.

From there, you can figure out the square feet — being the length by the width. A ten by ten storage unit is 100 square feet (10 feet times 10 feet). Knowing the square feet becomes helpful if you have large furniture (or even a vehicle) to store.

The amount of square footage can vary from unit to unit, and they are usually rented out on a monthly basis from these measurements.

To get really detailed, the full dimensions of the unit can be described as the length, width, and height (typically 8 feet), and the cubic footage is then calculated by multiplying those three dimensions.

For example, if you have a 10 by 10 unit with an 8 feet ceiling — the cubic feet would be 10 times 10 times 8 which equals 800 cubic feet.

Knowing the cubic feet comes in handy when you have to store a large item that is also very tall. An example could be a large hutch or dinette set or even a large floor standing clock.

You might see some storage facilities display their unit sizes in cubic feet, which takes into account the height of the unit in addition to its floor space.

Common Storage Unit Sizes

The most common sizes are: 5×5 , 5×10 , 5×15 , 10×10 , 10×15 , 10×20 , 10×25 , 10×30. There are larger sizes available although those larger sizes can be harder to find.

How big of a storage unit do I need.
It’s important to know what size storage unit you need as a way to make it easier to compare storage centers.

How Tall are Storage Units?

Storage units are usually between eight and ten feet high inside. Some storage facilities have 10-foot ceilings to accommodate unusual storage needs.

In large cities like New York, to reduce the cost to consumers there’s these new reduced-height storage units where they stack more units in the same facility. It gives the renters the same square footage floor space but for a lower cost.

What is the Difference Between Indoor and Outdoor Storage Units?

Indoor storage units (also call interior units) offer added security and peace of mind. You’ll keep your stuff safe and protected from the elements, and it’ll be stored in a secure location.

Characterized by indoor hallways, reaching your unit is quick and convenient. Indoor units are best suited for storing items when you thinking for an extended period of time.

Some indoor units include climate control options which makes it more comfortable when you’re moving things around.

Outdoor storage units typically allow you to drive up to the unit door. It’s a shorter walk from your truck to the storage unit. This allows for quick loading and unloading to your storage unit.

Outdoor units usually cost less. Sometimes it’s also called “mini storage.” With outdoor self storage units, you still get the storage center security features, such as gated access, surveillance protection and the guarding of the property.

Can My Storage Unit Be Used for a Workshop…

You can’t use your storage space as a workshop. Sorry about that. If you need space for a workshop, you might have luck on the private storage marketplaces.

Some storage centers may allow you to store products (similar to a warehouse) in a storage unit, but workshops where people are coming and going is not a good idea.

It depends on the company and which kind of unit. If you’re running a business from a personal storage unit, you probably won’t be able to operate it successfully; however, if you’re operating a business from a commercial storage unit, you might be able to do so with permission.

You may be able to use storage facilities as warehouses for storing your products, but you won’t be able to sell directly to walk in consumers at the unit location.

It’s a long way of saying it, but no, you can’t use a storage unit as a shop.

What Storage Unit Size Will Work for Me?

If you don’t know what storage unit size you need, you might be tempted to postpone getting one. We’ve found that if you wait too long to decide, the size you need might not be ready in time.

We recommend reserving one at no cost — and make a plan of when you want to move in. This guide can help you through the decision process.

A typical small storage unit measures approximately 5 feet by 5 feet, making them roughly the size of a large walk-in wardrobe. And this size is extremely affordable.

If you’re looking to store personal or business items, understanding and visualizing how much space this is can help determine whether the 5 x 5 is the right storage solution for you.

5 x 5 storage space may help decide how big of a storage unit do I need if the smallest unit works.
This is what a 5 x 5 storage space looks like

The 5 by 5 storage unit is typically the minimum storage unit size.

Compared to a closet, this storage unit is ideal for customers who have run out of storage room at home and need some extra space for their things.

The 5 x 5 storage unit fits into the small storage unit category and provides customers with a little extra space to store their belongings.

Once you know what fits into a 5 x 5 unit, it becomes easier to imagine what can fit into the larger units.

Items that can fit into a 5 by 5 storage unit may include:

Twin Mattress Small household furniture Seasonal Clothing Sporting Equipment/Gear Books and Documents Business Inventory File Boxes

Twin and Full mattresses will fit in a 5 × 5 unit.

Love seats might fit, but couches and sectionals are unlikely to fit.

Tables that are small or medium sized are likely to fit.

Things like night stands, desks, chairs, hope chests and end tables should fit.

Popular Uses for a 5 x 5 Storage Unit

Declutter a room or an entire house

Clutter is sneaky; it sneaks into our lives over time. Before long, there isn’t any room left to store everything, and finding where things are becomes difficult and time consuming.

It might be hard work, but decluttering can be liberating and even therapeutic. You could even have a declutter party on an afternoon and treat yourself to a nice dinner afterwards.

Most people struggle with the task of decluttering because they don’t want to throw away things that might prove useful someday.

Giving away, selling, or disposing of something can be too hard to deal with… especially if it’s because of memories, although sometimes it’s because family members expect us to be the keeper of the family antiques.

If you want to declutter but don’t want to part with items you might need someday, consider renting a 5×5 storage unit.

If your closet is full of clothes you don’t wear anymore, you could rent a 5 by 5 storage unit to hold them for when you need them again.

Sports equipment is used infrequently and often depending on the season. Storing your sports items in a 5 x 5 storage unit allows you to access them whenever you want.

If you feel there’s clutter at home, you’re not alone. In fact, it’s totally normal. It may be time to take that stand and say, “I’m getting my house back.”

You can even get the smallest storage unit and test out what it feels like to offload those things you seldom need. It can be liberating!

A Place to Store Things Between Semesters

Students who go away for college usually face a dilemma of where to store their belongings during the semester break. It makes no sense to carry a dorm full of belongings from one room to another. Or from one state to another.

The best solution for this problem is the 5 x 5 storage unit size. It’s neither too big nor too small; just roomy enough for a college student’s most treasured belongings.

Often you can find specials on the first month’s rent, especially during summertime — which could end up saving you some money.

If you think you’ll need one, get it sooner rather than later. If you wait too long, all the 5 by 5 storage units might be gone. Then you’d be forced into a size that’s larger than what you really want.

A Place for Family Heirlooms

Over time, you might collect some important items from relatives, acquaintances, or friends — things like photos, letters, and so forth.

You might not actually use these things every day, but you can’t entertain the thought of getting rid of something so valuable just because they’re old.

These things are extremely valuable and the family might be counting on you to hold onto them, almost like a museum. But they’re taking too much space in your home — leaving no room for the stuff you need.

That’s where a 5 x 5 storage unit can take the burden off your hands. You might not need the heirlooms right away, but a five by five storage unit can be a secure cost-effective place to store them until you do.

Getting boxes into a big storage unit
As you may have guessed, having the right sized truck for your move is important for planning purposes.

What Size Moving Truck do I Need for items fitting into a 5 by 5 Storage Unit?

For larger sizes (5 x 5 and up), we recommend using a moving van or pickup truck for transporting large items. You can also use a 4′ x 8′ or 5′ x 8′ cargo trailer.

Moving trucks come in different shapes and sizes. The biggest difference between a moving truck and a moving van is the height of the bed. A moving truck has a higher bed, which often means it can accommodate taller items.

You’ll have to decide how tall of a 5 x 5 storage unit to get, before deciding on the type of moving truck you need. When choosing a moving truck, make sure that it’s capable of carrying the weight of your items.

Most moving companies charge extra if you ask them to transport a heavy item. So, you should always check the specs of the vehicle you choose before making any final decisions.

The Most Popular Storage Unit Size

The most popular storage unit size

10 x 10 Storage Unit

The 10 x 10 unit is generally the most common storage unit size. It’s basically a small room that can hold the average contents of a 2 bedroom apartment.

What size storage unit is a 10 by 10 in comparison to? It’s half the size of a standard one-car garage. The 10 × 10 storage unit offers 100 square feet floor space and around 800 to 1000 cubic feet of storage space.

A 10 x 10 storage unit has enough space for several sets of bedroom furniture with plenty of room left over, which makes them ideal for storing the contents of a one- or two-bedroom apartment.

This size of storage units can store contents from one bedroom or an entire living room, a grand piano (although best in climate controlled), and even some appliances.

10 x 10 Storage Space is the most popular size. This most common size will often be a big enough storage unit to suit many peoples needs.
This is what a 10 x 10 Storage Space looks like.

The 10 x 10 storage space option.

Is a 10×10 storage unit enough? Picture this: you’re on the hunt for a storage unit, and the 10×10 option catches your eye.

But is it the right size for your unique storage needs? This 100-square-foot space, capable of housing the contents of a one or two-bedroom apartment (think furniture, appliances, and boxes), could be the perfect match.

However, before you sign on the dotted line, ask yourself these crucial questions:

  1. What will I be storing? Jot down an inventory of everything you plan to store – from sofas to saucepans – to get a clear idea of your storage requirements.
  2. Will my bulkier items fit in a 10×10 unit? Assess the size and dimensions of your more substantial belongings (such as couches and mattresses) to ensure they’ll work comfortably within the confines of a 10×10 space.
  3. How can I stack and organize my items? Incorporate shelves, stackable boxes, and the habit of maximizing vertical space to optimize every inch of your 10×10 unit.

After giving these questions some thought, if you find that the 10×10 unit is looking a little cramped, don’t be afraid to level up.

Exploring larger alternatives, like a 10×15 or 10×20 unit, could be the difference between a storage squeeze and a smooth storage experience.

Remember, it’s always better to have a little extra wiggle room than to struggle with a space that’s simply too tight.

Piano Storage

Pianos come in all shapes and sizes. The average piano weighs about 1,500 pounds. If your piano is too heavy for a 10 x 15, then you should consider a 10 x 20 or 10 x 25.

Pianos are sometimes stored on their sides, which means that the front of the piano faces away from the door. This allows you to access the interior without having to move the piano itself, although we don’t recommend storing a favored piano on its side.

It can be helpful to find a storage center that specializes in pianos. They will have a greater understanding of your need along with a greater appreciation for the health of your piano.

RV Storage

Once you find a space that is long enough, the next considerations for RV storage are shade and protection from people trying to steal parts off your RV (such as the catalytic converter and even your electric and plumbing accessories). For this reason, it’s best to choose a location where there are no trees nearby.

You also want to make sure that there aren’t many open windows in the RV. Windows allow thieves to see inside your RV.

If you have a lot of stuff, you might want to consider renting a 10 by 40 or 10 by 50 storage unit. This larger size of storage units provides more space than most homes.

Handy Ideas to Organize Your Storage Unit

Use sturdy boxes or heavy duty plastic containers of consistent size and shape — for packing up your belongings. Sort the group of boxes by fragility or weight so that heavier boxes are at the bottom and lighter ones are on top.

Stack boxes no more than four high. You can also put boxes on top of sturdy tables. Put your more important or frequently needed items near the front of your storage space.

That way you don’t have to go digging around for them later.

If you’re looking for somewhere to start storing your extra items, then a 5 x 5 storage unit might be a good place to begin.

If you’re looking for a small self-storage facility, a 5 by 5 storage unit may or may not be suitable for your needs. However, if you stack boxes vertically on top of each other, they’ll take up less room than if you stored them horizontally.

If you have questions about what you can store or the right type of unit for the items you are looking to store — we’re happy to help answer.

Frequently Asked Questions:

I’m wondering how to choose a storage unit…

Choosing the right storage unit involves considering factors such as size, location, accessibility, security, and climate control.

Here’s a step-by-step checklist from above to help you make the right choice:

  1. Determine your storage needs by taking an inventory of the items you plan to store.

  2. Choose the right size using the storage space calculator above.

  3. Look for storage facilities close to your home or workplace  and whether they offer 24/7 access if you anticipate needing frequent access to your unit.

  5. Security with robust features like 24-hour video surveillance, gated access and individual unit alarms.

  6. Insurance does your homeowners or renters insurance cover your belongings while in storage. If not, consider purchasing additional insurance through the storage facility or a third-party provider.

  7. Read the contract carefully.

  8. Go online and compare prices and reviews for storage facilities in your area.

How do I find storage units near me?

There’s lots of choice available. The challenge is to find a good center that stands out from the others.

To find storage units near you, follow these steps:

  1. Online search: Use search engines like Google or Bing and enter keywords such as “storage units near me” or “self-storage in [your city or area].” This will bring up a list of storage facilities nearby.

  2. Online directories: Visit self-storage directories or aggregator websites, like SpareFoot or Storage.com, where you can search for storage facilities by entering your ZIP code, city, or address. You can find out unit sizes, prices and customer reviews.

  3. Local listings and advertisements: Check local newspapers, classified ads, or community bulletin boards for storage unit advertisements. Local facilities might also have ads on billboards, buses, or benches.

  4. Ask for recommendations: This is my favorite. Talk to friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers who have used storage facilities in the past. They can provide valuable insights and recommendations based on their experiences.

  5. Drive around: Explore your local area and look for storage facilities nearby. Keep an eye out for signage or banners advertising self-storage services.

Once you’ve gathered a list of potential storage facilities, research and compare them based on factors such as location, accessibility, security, unit sizes, climate control, and pricing.

Visit the facilities in person or check their websites for more information, and read customer reviews to gauge the quality of their service.

How many storage unit sizes are there?

Self storage unit sizes may vary from facility to facility, but most centers have a similar set of unit sizes.

Common self storage units will feature sizes in 5′ x 5′, 5′ x 10′, 10′ x 10′, 10′ x 15′, 10′ x 20′, and sometimes larger units like 10’x30′ and 20’x’20’.

Depending on their local market, some facilities may also offer custom-sized units for customers

Each storage centers aims to provide a range of sizes to match the needs of their local market for individuals, families and even businesses.

Why are there so many storage unit sizes?

Part of how to pick a storage unit size is by finding out what sizes are available in a storage center’s local market. Usually the standard storage unit sizes are in each market.

The other part is that different customers will have different storage requirements — usually based on the amount and type of items to store.

For example, some people may only need a small unit to store a few boxes and personal items. A business, on the other hand, may need a larger unit for storing office equipment and inventory.

With a range of available unit sizes, storage facilities can cater to the specific needs of each customer to help them find the perfect unit for their storage need.

This actually works to your benefit because a variety of storage units sizes means that customers can choose a unit that fits within their budget.

What is the most popular storage unit size?

The most popular self storage units sizes can vary depending on the location and the storage facility, but typically the 10′ x 10′ unit is the crowd favorite.

The 10×10 has the right balance of space and affordability, and is suitable for a wide range of storage needs. People can store several personal items and businesses can store their inventory.

The next popular size would be the 10′ x 20′ unit. It’s ideal for those who have a larger amount of items to store — such as furniture, appliances and seasonal items.

How tall are storage units?

The typical storage unit is 8 feet tall. There are some units that can go as tall as 10 feet, but those are harder to find.

The reason why people as the question is because they have something large to store that is extra tall. But they might accidentally overlook something if the correct question is not asked.

The correct question should be, “How tall is the doorway opening to the self storage unit?” This is usually going to be 7 feet tall.

If you have something large and over 7 feet tall, you may want to check with your desired storage center to see if your belongings will fit.

Some storage centers may offer outdoor storage options for items that are too large to fit inside a traditional storage unit, such as boats or RVs.

When it comes to this type of covered outdoor storage space, the ceiling can be higher than ten feet — more like 14 to 16 feet up.

What can I put in a 5 by 5 space?

A large closet or a small bedroom could fit into a 5 by 5 self storage unit.

If you’re looking for something else to store, think about things like chairs, small desks, smaller bookshelves, suitcases and lamps; 5 x 5 storage units may be good options for storing holiday decorations, sports equipment, and clothes.

If you want to add extra space for the contents of a single small room, consider a 5 x 10 self storage unit.

Will a motorcycle fit in a 5 x 5 unit?

Most motorcycles won’t fit into a 5 x 5 self-storage unit. Policies about storing vehicles can vary between places and it’s always a good idea to check with your storage center manager about their rules.

If you need extra space for storing bikes, a 5 by 10 or 5 by 15 storage unit offers plenty of room for doing so. When storing a vehicle it needs to be working, licensed and insured.

For larger vehicle storage needs, many storage facilities have three types of storage space for cars, trucks and RVs. That being indoor, outdoor, and outdoor covered spaces.

Should I use Self Storage?

Self-storages units provide an affordable way to store your belongings in the event that you need them, where you don’t have space at home or at work.

Self-storage units can also be used as a temporary place to keep your belongings as you look for somewhere more permanent.

If you’re moving an entire home, it might make sense to use one of these units as a temporary holding spot until your new property is ready.

Self Storage Units – What You Need To Know

In any discussion all about storage, it’s important to mention why self storage units are so useful.

Read on and we’ll explain everything you need to know about choosing a storage facility.

Why Use Self Storage?

The first thing you should consider when looking into using self storage is whether you actually need it.

This may seem like a silly question, but if you already have enough room at home or work, there’s no real reason to go out and buy another unit.

However, if you do need extra space, then self storage could be a good option. It’s easy to rent a unit from a reputable company, and if you ask, they may offer a great deal.

You can also choose between different types and sizes of storage units depending on what kind of items you want to keep safe.

For example, some companies offer climate controlled units, which monitor temperature and humidity and can be ideal for storing furniture, antiques and other valuable items.

Also, most companies have a variety of storage unit sizes with drive up access — and many have indoor, outdoor and covered outdoor space for vehicles.

You could consider hiring a professional to help you move your stuff around. This means that you won’t have to lift anything yourself, and it’ll save you money in the long run.

Getting the Right Storage Space

Choosing a storage facility is all well and good, but you still need to decide exactly what you want to put inside the storage unit. After all, you wouldn’t want to end up with something that doesn’t fit!

Before you start packing, think about what you want to store. Will it be large items such as furniture, or small items such as clothes and books?

Will you need to access your belongings regularly, or just occasionally? If so, this will affect the amount of time you spend moving things around.

If you don’t know what you want to store yet, then take a look at our guide to choosing a storage unit. You might find that you change your mind after reading through it.

The best storage rates are often kept secret. You can call now to get an estimate and reserve your space — all within 5 minutes. To serve you quicker, call wait time is near zero.

How Much Does Self Storage Cost?

When it comes to renting a self storage unit, prices vary greatly depending on size and options. In fact, the cost of renting a unit can range anywhere from under $100 per month to several hundred.

This is because the price depends on how much space you require, and the size of the unit itself. There’s a standard saying in the storage business… “the larger the unit, the higher the price.” However, many people prefer smaller units because they’re easier to manage.

There are three main factors that determine the price of a self storage unit.

These include:

• Size

• Options

• Location

Some companies offer discounts if you book more than one year ahead of time, while others offer special deals for students and military personnel.

It’s always best to get quotes from several different companies before making any decision. This way, you can compare offers and see which suits your needs best. We can help you find a space near you. Call now to get an estimate.

Should I use self storage?

Using self-storage can offer many benefits depending on your specific needs and circumstances. And the cost is comparatively low.

Here are some reasons to consider using self-storage:

  1. Decluttering: If you have limited space in your home and need to store items that you don’t use frequently, self-storage can be a practical solution to help you declutter and free up living space.
  2. Temporary storage during a move: If you are moving and need a temporary place to store your belongings during the transition, self-storage can provide a safe and secure location for your items.
  3. Seasonal storage: Self-storage can be useful for storing seasonal items, such as holiday decorations, summer or winter clothing, and outdoor equipment, that you don’t need year-round.
  4. Renovations or home improvements: During home renovations or improvements, self-storage can provide a temporary place to store your belongings and protect them from damage.
  5. Business storage: If you own a business and need extra space for inventory, equipment, or documents, self-storage can be an affordable and convenient option.
  6. College students: Students living in dorms or small apartments can benefit from self-storage during summer breaks or when they need to store belongings temporarily while changing living arrangements.
  7. Vehicle storage: If you have a car, boat, RV, or motorcycle that you don’t use regularly and need a secure place to store it, some self-storage facilities offer vehicle storage options.

Before deciding to use self-storage, assess your specific needs, and consider factors such as cost, location, accessibility and security.

Ensure the facility you choose meets your requirements and provides a clean, safe and well-maintained environment for storing your belongings.

Paying for Storage

Once you have chosen a suitable storage unit, you’ll need to pay for it. Most companies charge monthly fees, although some only charge once.

It’s worth considering whether you would rather pay up front or monthly. Some companies allow you to spread payments out over 12 months, whereas others give you the choice of paying in full up front.

You can also opt for a flexible payment plan, which allows you to pay off the balance whenever you feel like it.

Demonstrating the benefits of self storage when answering the question, should I use self storage?
Self storage is more popular than ever

The top 10 reasons why people use a self-storage unit

1. To Store Large Items. Large items could be like an extra refrigerator or a bed — and you know you’re going to need it in three months. Those large items could take up a lot of space in your garage. Instead it’s very cost effective hold them in storage until needed. And then you get your garage space back.

2. To Keep Smaller Items Safely. If you don’t have room in your home for everything you own, you may find it difficult to keep track of things. That’s what about self storage that is so great. It’s perfect for keeping those small items out of sight, and safe from theft.

3. To Make Moving Easier. If you are moving into a new home, there could be delays until your home is ready. If you already have your belongings in storage and set to go, then you can move when you get word that your new home is ready.

4. To Protect Your Valuables. Climate-controlled units can cost more, but they provide many protections for putting valuables in self storage. Climate control can include heating and cooling and often the storage center will have a backup generator to make sure the temperature stays constant.

5. To Save Money. You can get a climate controlled “micro-warehouse” unit at a much lower price than an actual property type of rental. This is helpful for the business owner who just needs access to an inventory and the security that a self-storage facility provides

6. To Have Access To Your Things When You Need Them. Having a storage unit nearby means being able to get to your things quickly. Remember to keep the frequently used items near the front of your storage unit for fast access.

7. To Organize Your Home. You may haveseasonal items or extra things laying around that you don’t need for a while. Using self storage can get those items out of the way for a while — and help your home feel larger.

8. To Get Rid Of Clutter. Storage units offer a convenient place to get rid of clutter. You can pack away boxes, clothing, and other items that you no longer need.

9. To Be More Secure. Self storage facilities are usually safer than leaving valuables outside where they might be stolen. They are also better equipped to protect against fire and water damage.

10. To Create Extra Room.If you’re out of room for home or office belongings, a self-storage unit can be cost effective for holding your items and keeping them safe.

Self Storage Units are Easy To Rent

Self storage units are easy to rent, and there are plenty of companies offering them. All you need to do is find a company that meets your needs, and then fill out a form.

The process is usually quite straightforward, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a suitable storage facility. Once you have found one, you simply need to make a booking.

The majority of companies offer 24 hour access, meaning that you don’t have to worry about being locked out at night.

What Is The Difference Between A Warehouse And A Self Storage Facility?

A warehouse is a building where goods are stored. They are used to store everything from cars to household appliances.

A self-storage facility is similar to a regular house or office. It has a driveway, parking spaces, and doors that open into the property.

It’s important to remember that a self-storage facility isn’t always secure. Some thieves break into these buildings to steal items.

If you want to keep your belongings safe, then you should consider renting a lockable storage container instead.

Is There Anything Else To Consider When Choosing A Storage Unit?

Most storage companies offer discounts for students and those who sign up to regular services.

However, there are certain things that you should consider when looking for a storage unit. For example, some places may not accept pets on the premises, and many have restrictions on what you can place into storage.

Also, make sure that the storage facility has 24 hour security. It’s all about keeping your items safe and secure.

Finally, check out reviews online to ensure that customers are happy with the service provided by the storage center.
